Houston Society – History and Philosophy

The Houston Society was founded by Dominique de Menil in 1967 and now presents two public series of events: The Discovery Forum – a thematic series of lectures and the Dig Deeper Connoisseur Series that takes the audience out of the lecture hall into the community.

Activities of the Houston Society represent a unique departure for an archaeology organization.  AIA Houston has made a commitment to offer a series of events designed to create cultural literacy and enhance understanding of a wide range of world cultures.  We implemented this focus in 2007 when we celebrated our 40th anniversary by devoting our entire Discovery Forum Lecture Series to the Near East – civilization’s birthplace.

The Houston Society collaborates with:

  •        The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
  •        The Menil Collection
  •        The Houston Museum of Natural Science
  •        The Rothko Chapel
  •        The Italian Consulate
  •        The Indian Consulate
  •        The Royal Danish Consulate
  •        The Hellenic Culture Center of the Southwest
  •        India House
  •        The Arab American Educational Foundation
  •        The Jung Center

We are commited to fostering cultural knowlede from an early age up through college and have created an outreach strategy to enhance lives and increase the cultural awareness.  Our educational events reach not only students but members of the community.
