Roughly six hundred miles separate Jamestown, Virginia from Plymouth, Massachusetts, but the more striking separation between these two early American settlements were the lifestyles and ideologies of their founders. The New England settlers were often characterized by their desire to be free of religious persecution, while the Anglican settlers of Virginia had largely economic motives for building a New World colony. Two Ways of Living, an interactive presentation at the Kilroy Visitor and Education Center, explores the distinctions between these two groups, and how it affected everything about their lives, from their diet to their dress, and even their speech. Following the presentation, tour rooms with a 17th century focus that are part of the Bayou Bend Collection.
